Beauty for minimalists

In an era of new beauty products popping up every week (or what feels like it), it’s hard to sift through every damn thing to find one that actually works for your skin. It’s not easy to discern today’s cult brands which, with clever advertising and aesthetically pleasing exteriors, have catapulted themselves to every Instagram girl’s feed. But within my ever-expanding list of products to test out, I’ve been lucky enough to come across a couple that live up to their reputations. PS. I always stick to the philosophy of sticking with what works, rather than with what is popular. It so happens that these products are a combination of both, and thank god they are so.

Many of you know when it comes to beauty, I adopt a minimalistic approach, choosing to focus more on the health of my skin. While I tend to gravitate towards micellar water on a daily basis, I turn to Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser for a deeper cleanse that leaves my skin feeling, well, fresh. Hydration is an important step in my routine too, so I go in afterwards with a generous dose of the Rose Face Mask, before locking the moisture in with the Black Tea Overnight Firming Mask. This routine is typically reserved for when I’ve had a long day and my skin appears a little dull; kind of a DIY spa day at home, if you will. Nothing beats the calming cocktail of scents cooked up by the artists over at Fresh. They sure know the best way to capture a skincare junkie’s heart.

My daily make-up routine is much less complicated. One of my must-have products are Glossier’s Lash Slick mascara, aka the only mascara on earth that can salvage my limp and straight Asian lashes. They lengthen the lashes without making them look dramatic, which is never what I want to achieve on a daily basis. To add some natural definition and glow, I turn to Cloud Paint in the shade Dusk. The creamy formula blends seamlessly, and I personally find that the best way to apply it is with a damp beauty blender.

My latest vanity table mainstay is the fabled Glossier You perfume. It is without a doubt the holy grail perfume for me,  and I never throw that title around lightly. First off, the bottle is incredible photogenic - I literally spent 10 minutes photographing it, making the most of the golden hour light at home. I find myself reaching for this bottle more than any of the other perfumes I have at the moment. Glossier You gives off a scent I can’t quite place my finger on. It’s one part playful and two parts part laid back - the epitome of the Glossier girl.

Off duty

Ah, weekends. The age-old dilemma between lazing around all day versus stretching one's time as much as is humanely possible. The logic behind lazing around being: you've spent the past five days working so hard, you deserve a break. But the latter is appealing too because, well, you've only got two days to escape from your regular 9 to 5; you've got to do EVERYTHING.

I'm generally in the former camp for the most part. Whatever plans I make (if any) should require little to no effort, from whipping a quick meal up to slapping an outfit on. If I'm not slipping into a casual cotton dress, this ensemble does just fine as well.

Linen has perpetually been one of my go-to's, ever since I discovered its existence years ago. Its raw element, paired with a neutral colour, makes it a wardrobe essential of mine. Throw in Uniqlo's rayon blouse (how amazing is rayon?!) and I've got myself an off-duty outfit, perfect for my lazy weekends.

Vanilla with Mika

Oh, for the love of neutrals. While we don't have the luxury of the four seasons here in Singapore - durian season doesn't count! - it's time to acknowledge that summer is officially coming to a close. Here's celebrating all my favourite trends from the past months, shoulder-baring, wicker-weaving and all. Maybe it's a good thing we suffer from the tropical heat all year long, because as the summer aesthetic endures in this tiny island, so does my love for patterned scarves and rattan baskets. The vanilla chronicles continue, I suppose. One item I'll definitely be wearing time and again is my checkered bandeau top. I've always had a strong aversion towards tube tops. For reasons unbeknownst, the two fine lines (ha, pun intended) separating spaghetti strap tops and bandeaus made a world of difference. It wasn't until I received this gorgeous piece from Luna & Lucifer that I finally got rid of my irrational fear and embraced the summer trend with arms wide open. Already, this bandeau has travelled with me to sunny Bali, completing my outfits in between pool dips and cafe brunches. Shop this bandeau and more with Luna & Lucifer, and get a discount when you enter "JAE15" upon checkout. Enjoy! ---Creative direction, photography & styling by me

Winter Is Here

Just as I embark on my spring break travels, here's a brief look at my winter break summarised in pictures. Icy winter draft not included.

Barcelona
__

A city chock full of modernism influence - you really can't walk through the city without a reminder of Gaudi's genius - that leaves you pleasantly surprised with every turn. This Catalonian hub is filled with gems, from generous tapas bars to the famous La Boqueria (where you can't leave without washing a dozen prosciutto slices down with fresh sangria). Barcelona never fails to disappoint and always leaves me with a warm happy belly aka food baby.

Rome
__

The city boasts a multitude of ancient structures that I couldn't stop gaping at; the Pantheon literally rendered me speechless as I took in all of its massive pillars. Then there's Oceanus, basking in his aquatic glory at the world-famous Trevi Fountain, always a good place to explore and grab a pistachio gelato or two. Despite the never-ending crowd, Rome sure knows how to steal my heart with its cobblestone streets.

Venice
__

A city like no other, we had the privilege to witness its (extremely) rare snow day, which was a treat at first but gradually became a nuisance. It only made us want to stay indoors more, specifically in this one little eatery right around the corner from our airbnb, which serves the most amazing squid ink pasta I had ever had (seriously not exaggerating here lol). It was so good we had to go back at least once a day. The best part about Venice was roaming about its alleys, basking in the winter air and soaking in the sights in the city that time forgot.

Melbourne Overheard

Capturing the best of my Melbournian summer escape... Brunch, bric-a-brac, and a technicolour sunset to boot.
